Meet the Educators

Karen DeBord and Wally Goddard

Karen DeBord, Ph. D.
Child Development Specialist

Dr. Karen DeBord has been with North Carolina Cooperative Extension since July, 1995. Her more than 20 years of previous Extension experience include county agent experience in Virginia and state specialist responsibilities in Virginia and Missouri. Dr. DeBord provides leadership and support to child development and parenting Extension work in the state. She conducts applied research and develops supporting educational materials and programs relevant to community needs primarily for quality child care, child development, professional development for child care providers, community coalitions for child care, community acceptance of diversity, and parent education.

Dr. DeBord is recognized for her leadership with the National Parent Education Network, National Extension Network for Child Care, the National Children, Youth, and Families Extension Network, and the. She seeks creative ways to provide educational information as can be seen in her use of technology with several interactive learning sites on the web on Reggio Emilia, Children's Environments, Professional Development for Child Care Professionals, and Program Evaluation that goes Beyond the Data.

Dr. DeBord received her Bachelor of Science and Ph. D. in Family and Child Development from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and her Masters in Education in Mental Retardation from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.

Wally Goddard
Extension Family Life Specialist
University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension

Wally Goddard is a Family Life Specialist for the University of Arkansas Extension Service. He was one of four scholars appointed by the U.S. government to develop a model of parenting and has written popular parenting and teen programs that are used nationwide. Dr. Goddard has also written for Meridian Magazine and the Franklin Covey Company. He is a popular speaker with groups of all ages. He and his wife, Nancy, have three children, three grandchildren, and have cared for over twenty foster children.
