Healthy K.I.D.S. Newsletter

Description: Supported by a grant from MetLife Foundation and developed by clinicians from The Children's Health Fund's National Children's Health Project Network, the Healthy K.I.D.S. program consists of English and Spanish newsletters which provide simple, accurate and cultural information on nutrition and fitness. Healthy K.I.D.S. newsletters are produced in accordance with low literacy writing and design conventions. Authors strive to incorporate ethnic and cultural diversity into all content and illustrations. Materials are field tested within CHF's National Network and are reviewed by a medical anthropologist for cross-cultural appropriateness, and an exercise physiologist for safety.

Learn the Signs: Act Early - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Description: This web site by CDC provides new data that show an average of 1 in every 110 children in certain parts of the United States has an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The data also show that the average age at which children are diagnosed with an ASD is 4 1/2 years. Parenting Wisely

Description: The Parenting Wisely (PW) Program is an interactive CD-ROM program designed for parents of adolescents and pre-adolescents (ages 9-18). It is a low-cost, effective, and entertaining form of intervention available to organizations and individual parents. Parents of adjudicated or high risk youth need to learn appropriate parenting skills, especially since these youth are challenging and can and do escalate their misbehavior when parents respond with coercion, threats, or permissiveness. "Head Start on Science" Preliminary Findings

Description: This research paper was presented as a poster session at the Head Start National Research Conference in 1998. The paper describes the findings of the implementation of a science curriculum in Head Start classrooms. The purpose of this project--a collaborative effort of California State University, Long Beach and the Head Start Program of Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD)--was to prepare Head Start staff to become more capable, comfortable, confident, and enthusiastic about their own and their Head Start families'"sense of wonder" about the world through hands-on science experiences.
