Volunteer and Non-Medical Personnel Involvement in a Community-Based Clinic

Description: Recently, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) contracted with the Environmental Protection Agency to recruit participants for a study on the long-term health effects of chronic exposure to arsenic in drinking water. The resulting clinic, to collect data from Churchill County residents, was the largest of its kind ever conducted in the United States. The clinic was designed for targeted residents who were 45-years old or older and had lived in Churchill County for 20 years or more. A follow-up study conducted by UNCE may be of interest to others who conduct targeted clinic and who wish to increase the participation by the targeted group. The use of volunteer and non-medical personnel in the clinic may be of particular interest to health care professionals and participatory organizations.
