The CYFERnet School-Age Editorial Board, “Extension CARES…for America’s Children and Youth National Initiative,” 4-H Afterschool, and Academy for Educational Development are sponsoring this afterschool training for Extension faculty and staff who are engaged in afterschool and school-age programming.

Learn about the Academy for Educational Development (AED) and the Promising Practices in Afterschool System. AED is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to solving critical social problems in the U.S. and throughout the world through education, social marketing, research, training, policy analysis and innovative program design and management. Major areas of focus include health, education, youth development, and the environment.

The mission of the AED Center for Youth Development and Policy Research (the Center) is to create and strengthen the infrastructures that support the positive development of all youth in America. AED, the Academy for Educational Development, the Center's parent organization, is an independent, nonprofit service organization committed to addressing human development needs in the United States and throughout the world.

The AED Center for Youth Development and Policy Research (the Center) began the Promising Practices in Afterschool System in October of 1999 with funding from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. They developed a process to identify and distribute promising afterschool program practices in seven component areas. The Advisory Panel was made up of professionals from the youth development, school-age care, and education worlds.

The Promising Practices in Afterschool System (PPAS) is an effort to identify and share effective practices in afterschool programs and advance the afterschool field. Practices are selected based on national standards and criteria. Once selected, they are entered into a web-based system. The PPAS website is for youth development professionals and afterschool program directors who want to improve the quality of their programs.
