Life Skills

Materials (per group)
  • Animal cards with name and pictures

Doing the Activity
  1. Draw an animal card from the group of cards.
  2. The groups goal is to guess the animal as quickly as possible by choosing good questions to ask.
  3. The group then asks questions about the animal! Example of possible acceptable questions:
    • How many legs does it have?
    • Does it fly?
    • Does it live in water?
    • What type of sound does it make?
    • What does it eat?
  4. Everyone gets an opportunity to do an animal.

Reflecting
  1. Draw pictures of animals that were used during the game or find and cut out pictures in magazines to make a collage for several animals.
  2. Discuss and answer questions:
    • What did you learn about animals?
    • What else would you like to learn about animals?
    • What are some things that make animals different from each other?
    • What are some things that make animals similar to each other?
    • What types of questions made it easy to guess the animal?

Applying
Working in teams of 2 - 4 members each team is to take set of pictures and attempt to put them into groups. Possible groups may include:
  • Farm animals
  • Flying animals
  • Animals that live in water
  • Meat eating animals
  • Animals grouped by color
  • Animals found where it is cold

Teams share how they have grouped animals with the entire group.

What's Happening
Students are recognizing that animals have many similarities and differences. They are also developing their observation and questioning skills.

More Challenges
