Materials (per group)
  • 4 tennis balls per person
  • 6 foot pole (optional)
  • large area inside or outside with hard floor

Doing the Activity
  1. Your team is to cross a contaminated area. You and any one on your team can not make any physical contact with the ground while in this contaminated area.
  2. Team members each receive four tennis balls that have been treated with a substance that makes them impervious to contamination.
  3. Using only the tennis balls, your team is to make their way across the contaminated area.
  4. If anyone on the team touches the floor with any part of their body , they must return to the start.
  5. Tennis balls can be shared and be used in any manner or position on the floor. They may be recycled.
  6. Use tape to establish the boundaries of the contaminated area. Area should be approximately 20 feet (6 meters).
  7. Spot or assist other team members.

Reflecting
  • How did your team decide how to use the tennis balls?
  • How did your team feel when they did or did not accomplish their goal?
  • Did your team work together to achieve goal?
  • What did you learn about decision making while doing this activity?

Applying
  • How can you apply what you learned about decision making to other situations?
  • How will what you learned about problem solving be useful in the future?
  • How can you become a better decision maker?
  • How will I change because of what I have learned?

What's Happening
Teams will use several problem solving techniques and decision making skills in attempting to accomplish their goal. They will learn to identify possible solutions, compare and select best alternative, plan a strategy, carry out the plan, and evaluate the results.

More Challenges
  • Can your team accomplish the same goal with fewer tennis balls?
