May is National Community Action Month! There are many ways you can take action in your community, and CYFERnet Community has resources to help get you started.
We often think Taking Action in Your Community is something for heroes and "activists", but it is really just everyday people deciding to make a difference in their community by becoming involved.
Community involvement can happen at many levels. One way to get started is to volunteer for a local community organization that does something you find important. Volunteering can help you meet new people and find areas where your community can benefit from your expertise. Volunteering can also be a great activity to do together as a family.
Parents who act as partners in their children's education enhance their children's success, improve their own learning and sense of belonging in the community while helping to make their community a better place for all children. Learn how you can take action.
Communities are becoming more and more culturally and ethnically diverse. Learn how volunteer-based services can capture this diversity to inform practice.
Another important type of involvement is participating in a Community Coalition. If there is an issue in your community that you care about, you can join a group of people that work together on that issue. If there is no existing group, you can always form one.
For those of you who have an interest in the more physical aspects of your community, maybe Organizing a Community Improvement Project is for you. CYFERnet has resources on everything from community clean up projects to starting a community garden. Community projects are a great way to make a difference that many people in your community will see and enjoy.
No matter what you decide to do, community action can be a fun,
rewarding activity and a great way to take action to improve your
community.
