Research indicates that reading motivation is associated with higher reading achievement and frequent reading. Despite the centrality of motivational issues to learning to read, these have rarely been the focus of reading strategies. This Showcase will address the issues of motivation and reading for pleasure. High-impact intervention strategies to motivate youth to develop a love for reading will be provided.

Elementary School-Based Nutrition and Physical Activity Intervention in the Arkansas Delta

The Delta HOPE (Healthy Options for People through Extension) is a multi-state school-based intervention designed to integrate physical activity and nutrition education into core subject areas. County Extension agents trained teachers to use the curricular materials and asked them to fit the lessons into their usual classroom routine, supplemented lessons with food tastings, and evaluated program for positive results.

4-H and the Air Force: A Partnership Worth Noting

The F.U.N. and G.A.M.E.S. (Families Understanding Nutrition and Getting Active-- Monitoring Each Step) exhibit explains the collaboration of Little River County, Arkansas, Extension Agent-Family & Consumer Science Becky Reynolds and Foreman Elementary School (1) to establish a walking trail on the school campus to increase physical activity and (2) to increase awareness in students and parents about healthy eating through hands-on workshops.

Kids Cooking Up Some Fun!

Teaching youth to take charge of their health can be a challenge especially in today’s fast paced world. Through the program, Kids Cooking Up Some Fun youth learned basic concepts in food preparation and meal planning following Dietary
Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid.  They also learned the importance of exercise and taking care of their body.

New Mexico’s Just Be It! Project Increases Student Nutrition Knowledge

New Mexico Cooperative Extension's program, Just Be It! Healthy and Fit, reduces the risk factors for childhood obesity in 5th graders from Rio Arriba, Santa Fe and Los Alamos counties. An experimental research design was implemented in 2006-2007 and showed that students in the treatment group had a statistically significant increase in their nutrition knowledge when compared to the control group.


Healthy Lifestyles – Youth & Adult Partnerships

In Pike County Arkansas, targeted youth between the ages of 5 and 12 experienced hands-on-learning, had fun and received vital information that addressed reversing the climbing trends of overweight and obesity.  Youth attended a school program entitled, " Health on the Range ", summer day camps such as " Color Me Healthy " and "Tie One On: An Apron That Is " and brought parents and other siblings to Family Night.

4-H & Military Partnerships

The 4-H partnerships with Army and Air Force and our new partner, Navy, provide programs and services to military connected youth whether they live on installations or in local communities. Visit the Program Showcase to see how 4-H is enhancing the lives of military youth through 4-H Clubs, summer camps, technology labs and Operation: Military Kids activities.


Creating Clover Connections: The Arizona 4-H Military Partnership

Connections are key to strong collaborative 4-H and military partnerships. The Arizona 4-H Military Partnership spans 8 installations separated by the Pacific ocean and multiple time zones. Creating Clover Connections is the key to provide a unified thrust of consistent programming and support with county extension 4-H Youth Development faculty and military installations. Staff development and training are two consistent priorities from the installations.A train-the trainer concept is employed so that military personnel can replicate the training at their installation.
