CyberCamp Teacher/Leader Resources
Resources for teachers, volunteer leaders and parents who want to use the CyberCamp site for group activities, or to interact with an individual youth who is using the site.
How To Use This Site With Your Youth Groups
Major CyberCamp activities have a one-page guide sheet. Those guides give additional information and suggestions for using that particular activity. Here are suggestions for using the CyberCamp activities in general.
- Make it an adventure for your group. If you have access to camping equipment or supplies, set them up for youth to see and experience.
- Create rituals, such as singing around the (virtual) campfire or making and eating a camp treat.
- Set the stage for a camping experience. Ask how many have ever gone camping? Either an overnight or backyard camp with family or friends? How many have participated in day camps through church, 4-H or other youth groups? Have the youth share their experiences. If no one has had any camping experiences, ask them what they think it would be like.
- Be prepared. Visit the CyberCampsite in advance so that you know scheduled events and available activities. Check plug-ins and browser compatibility. Review the teacher/leader packet for background information and suggested additional activities.
Get supplies that you might need for offline activities. Stay one step ahead of the group.
- Encourage involvement. Allow youth to think and discover for themselves rather than provide all the answers.
- Learn together. Explore links and other activities with the group. You may discover some really fun and educational web sites together.
- Share with family and friends. Encourage youth to write and send e-postcards to family members and friends, or make a craft to give them at the end of camp.
Each of us teaches and learns with our own unique style. Remember, that even in
learning, diversity is the spice of life.
