Acknowledgments:

This guide has been developed with the help of many groups and individuals. The author wishes to thank the National Agricultural Library, whose materials and, in some cases citations, we have used. We also thank the Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas (ATTRA) program, and the many other groups nationally who suggested materials for review; Dr. Steve Stevenson at the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems for his thoughtful supervision; the Wisconsin Rural Development Center, which obtained funding to develop the guide and helped supervise the project, including help from Bob Meyer, Bob Panzer and Margaret Krome; agricultural instructors from around the state who gave us invaluable evaluations of materials, as did the honorary agricultural education organization at UW-River Falls, Alpha Tau Alpha, Dr. Richard Jensen at UW-River Falls; and funding from the federal Agriculture in Concert with the Environment program (ACE) as well as the Educational Foundation of America, without whose support this guide could not have been compiled.

Introduction

The purpose of this database of teaching materials on sustainable agriculture topics is to help instructors select teaching resources most suitable to their needs. This resource list can be used in conjunction with Wisconsin's teacher's reference guide, Toward a Sustainable Agriculture, which is targeted to high school instructors. However, this resource guide may be useful to grade levels other than high school. In Wisconsin, it also can be used in conjunction with a lending library, to be administered, at least initially, by the Wisconsin Association of Vocational Agricultural Instructors (WAVAI). While the lending library will make available some materials, others can be obtained through public libraries or by contacting organizations as noted.

The contents include a list of videos, slide shows, written text, curricula, and articles that have been evaluated through a statewide teachers' review process to be Recommended resources to teach various aspects of sustainable agriculture. There also is a list of Additional Resources that instructors and others may find useful. While some resources may be more helpful than others for instructors, virtually none of them has been developed specifically for high school classroom use; some may require additional study questions and supporting materials.

The process of developing this guide included several steps. In the fall of 1991, we distributed a questionnaire to sustainable agriculture advocacy groups nationwide asking for suggestions of resources for us to review. We received a generous response to our distribution of questionnaires and ordered materials from private and public agencies nationwide. During the winter of 1991/92, we distributed these materials to Wisconsin agricultural instructors and to an honorary agricultural education organization at UW-River Falls, for them to review using a standard evaluation form. Based on those reviews, we adjusted our lists into Recommended and Additional Resources and wrote the annotations that we hope will be useful to instructors.

Other resource guides on sustainable agriculture information exist, many of them excellent. While we have drawn on some of their contents and used them at times, we found the need for a resource guide aimed at high school instruction. We look forward to feedback helping us to refine and update it. And refine it we will, if only because new resources are continually emerging. We urge you to fill out the card inside to the last page and return it with your comments.
